HOW THE TOURNAMENT CAME ABOUT

It was a long time in the making and had always been one of Commonwealth Soccer League, Inc.'s goals to host the first sanctioned adult soccer tournament in the Fredericksburg area. The thought came to fruition in 2009 when CSL hosted the 1st Annual Commonwealth Classic on July 11-12 at Patriot Park in Spotsylvania County, Va.

On a whim one day before the CSL Spring 2009 season, CSL President Tom Leiss decided that this would be the year the league would host its own tournament. He contacted MDCVSA, the league's parent organization, to see what needed to be done to do so. The necessary paperwork and fees were sent in and not much later, CSL received the OK for the event. The wheels were set in montion for the first of what will be many fun and exciting tournaments in the future.

Much of the tournament, including the majority of the tournament's rules, was based on those of the Neptune Soccer Classic that happens every August in Virginia Beach, Va. Several of us have attended this event for many years and it was a perfect example to go by, as it is one of the largests tournament on the East coast. Without this tournaments influence and the help of its organizers, our Commonwealth Classic wouldn't be the same.

The 1st annual tournament may not have happened without the help of Jimmy Fletcher and the Spotsylvania County Parks & Recreation Department, who allowed us to use the beautiful Bermuda grass fields at Patriot Park. Not to mention the help of Referee Assignor Bob Walsh and our local soccer referee association RSRA.

Perhaps most importantly, we owe the first 11 coed and 2 men's teams that helped get the innagural 2009 event on the soccer map in the region. These 13 teams were only a start, and the ultimate goal is to fill the tournament with a maximum of 32 teams in the years to come.
